Envisioning a
Sustainable Future
Together
Resilient Region aims to convene government, industry and community to envision a more livable, affordable and resilient Metro Vancouver
Help Shape a More Livable, Connected, and Climate-Resilient Metro Vancouver
Metro Vancouver is entering a once-in-a-generation moment of opportunity. If managed well, new provincial legislation centred around transit oriented areas and urban infill development can open the door to vibrant, walkable neighbourhoods - places where homes, jobs, transit, parks, and community life come together in ways that can strengthen our region for decades to come.
The Resilient Region Foundation serves a unique role as a creative forum to convene various levels of government, public agencies, industry professionals and community representatives within Metro Vancouver to anticipate the potential impacts, challenges and opportunities of recent provincial housing reform legislation. Through focussed research, open dialogue, site- specific scenarios modelling at district and neighbourhood scales, the Foundation aims to bring some of the brightest minds together to demonstrate how future growth under the new legislation can be planned responsibly to achieve the desired outcomes of improving livability, affordability, and climate resilience.
The Resilient Region Design Charrette will be the primary forum to explore these initiatives in the fall of 2026. Bold urban design strategies from corridor-based High Streets to complete Urban Villages and thriving District Centres will demonstrate how future growth can be delivered in ways that can be realistically phased, equitable, and deeply connected to the unique identities of our communities.
Join us and be part of designing the region we all want to call home.
A more resilient region
The Resilient Region Design Charrette will explore forward-looking design strategies that prepare Metro Vancouver for future climate, environmental and infrastructure challenges. By aligning development with nature-based systems, reducing risk exposure, and coordinating growth across municipal boundaries, we can build a region that adapts - not reacts - to change.
Increasing housing affordability
Through design-based scenarios testing, participants will assess how transit-oriented areas can meaningfully increase supply, lower cost pressures, and provide a diverse mix of housing types. The charrette aims to demonstrate how smarter land use, phased infrastructure delivery, and streamlined approvals can unlock affordability at the regional scale.
Improving livability
The charrette will illustrate how integrated public spaces, safe mobility choices, and access to amenities can shape complete 15-minute communities. By elevating local identity, culture, and access to nature, we can ensure growth enhances - rather than erodes - the human experience.
The 2026 Resilient Region Design Charrette
The Resilient Region Design Charrette aims to collaboratively explore the implications of new housing legislation on our region's future. Our objectives focus on enhancing community amenities, protecting ecological systems, ensuring housing affordability, and evaluating the impact of land speculation. By assessing infrastructure needs and testing innovative development strategies, we strive to create a sustainable and resilient future for all residents.
